Fixspec Open Source Machine-Readable ROE Format - Finspec Schema

FinSpec Schema

London, 2 March 2016

FixSpec's founding vision is that the creation and sharing of machine-readable API specifications can unlock massive efficiency gains in financial markets connectivity. In support of that vision, FixSpec are today open-sourcing the FinSpec schema, designed for the creation of multi-protocol, machine-readable API specifications (also known as ROEs).

The schema and documentation are available on Github under the Apache 2.0 license, and FixSpec actively encourages contributions and discussion to the development of the schema from all areas of the industry.

Using the ubiquitous JSON format, API specifications which comply to the FinSpec schema will have a prescribed format and structure, making them machine-readable for the recipient, and easy to compare. FixSpec have also provided a simple validation tool to assist with validation.

FixSpec have been championing the idea of machine-readable specifications ever since the company was founded. A decade ago, the best way of defining standards was via committee and agreement; today it is via Github. We firmly believe that the right way to launch and evolve this schema is out in the open, with the ability for the whole industry to contribute their ideas and requirements.

Based on our conversations with stakeholders, it is no longer a question of if legacy PDF specifications will be replaced by machine-readable ROEs, but when they will be replaced. We want to play our part in raising the overall efficiency of the industry, and achieve it for all protocols and not just one.

Chris Lees, Founder of FixSpec

FinSpec schema has been designed to be multi-protocol from launch, making it suitable for both standard-based protocols such as FIX and SWIFT, commonly-used protocols such as OUCH and ITCH, and even custom protocols such as proprietary binary formats. It is agnostic to asset class and can be used freely for both internal and external projects.

  • Clean, predictable URL constructions that are easy to share.
  • Excel now joins JSON, QuickFIX and fix8 in our growing library of export formats.

Ullink Accelerates FIX Certification With FixSpec

NYFIX Services will revolutionise FIX onboarding through fast and efficient, fully automated certification with global visibility

London and Paris, 29 January 2015

Ullink, a global provider of market leading electronic trading and connectivity solutions to the financial community, and FixSpec Limited, the London-based FinTech start-up dedicated to simplifying and accelerating financial services connectivity, today announce an agreement to streamline connectivity across the global Ullink NYFIX network using FixSpec's Central platform. Ullink will become the first vendor to implement this new technology.

FixSpec will be installed at global hubs located in Hong Kong, Paris and New York, allowing Ullink staff to monitor and certify the entire global FIX network in real time, from one consolidated internal website. The platform allows Ullink to track client testing traffic, including all internal mappings across the network, as well as validating that outbound order flow sent to brokers and exchanges continues to comply with each venues’ specifications and requirements.

Fully automated certification for the onboarding process means Ullink’s clients can migrate to the Ullink routing network without the need for time consuming and inefficient manual intervention to review and validate against counterparty rules of engagement. With FixSpec, Ullink’s clients’ no longer need to allocate additional manpower to check hundreds of counterparties pre-migration. At the same time it increases the accuracy of the process and eliminates many post-migration issues that could be disruptive to trading and support teams. Additionally the volume of individual connections is no longer limited by the manpower available. Hundreds and thousands of certifications can be electronically validated at the same time, with 100% accuracy.

FixSpec founder Chris Lees said: "We are excited to work with Ullink on this pioneering project, the scope and ambition of which has never been delivered before. Ullink becomes the first FIX network in the world to offer such a solution, which will significantly streamline connectivity for their customers".

"At Ullink we continually strive to offer cutting-edge and innovative solutions to our clients," said Richard Ring, Global Operations Director of Ullink’s NYFIX Services. "To become the first vendor in the market that provides automated self-certification is an exciting development for our clients. FixSpec makes our onboarding process one of the fastest and most efficient services in the industry."

Additional features are planned to further enhance network services for Ullink’s customers, including a new client portal, which will allow customers to view testing traffic, as well as directly request and review additional connectivity routes via a secure interface.

FixSpec Puts Free Tools On Developers Desktop With Eclipse Plugin

Empowering Gateway Developers to Connect Faster

London, 3 March 2014

FixSpec announce the launch of a free plugin for the popular Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE), integrating the power of FixSpec tools directly into the developers desktop. Developers can now search, save and view trading and market data specifications without ever leaving the IDE, and use simple right-click actions to decode FIX message directly from their console window.

FixSpec partner Mahendra Patil commented "While we already have many cool tools for developers on FixSpec.com, firing up a browser to use them means extra steps, losing your train of thought and - let's face it – the temptation to check other things while in your browser. As an ex-gateway nerd myself, I know how few tools there are out there, and I would have loved to have something like this to make my work even more productive."

"In the last two months we've released a new, responsive website for mobile devices, an extension for the popular Chrome browser, and now an Eclipse plugin for developers" commented founder Chris Lees. "It's all part of our push to disrupt the way the industry shares and codes to API specifications which we believe is deeply inefficient. Our free tools make developers and business analysts look like superheroes by giving them easier access to the information they need to integrate faster and with fewer errors. For trading venues, networks and brokers, that means getting clients and revenue in the door faster."

The eclipse and Chrome plugins are available from the following links. Both are provided free of charge and require a free FixSpec.com registration.

  1. Eclipse plugin for developers
  2. Chrome plugin for business users

London, 13 February 2014

FixSpec is pleased to announce the immediate launch of a free Chrome extension, embedding the power and convenience of FixSpec's specification indexing service into the world's most popular browser. Founder Chris Lees commented "We are always looking for ways to give better tooling to friends and customers working to build and maintain trading and market data connections. Keeping up with the rapid pace of spec change is harder than people think, especially for software vendors or in-house developers who often juggle 50 or more venues at once. And that's before you start the 'spot-the-difference' game between two PDF specs. Almost 50% of visitors to fixspec.com use the Chrome browser, so we know that this extension will bring immediate benefit to a large swathe of the industry."

The extension is available for free from the Chrome Web Store.

FixSpec Adds Anonymous Client Access To Cloud Certification Platform

Automated certification emulator + Benefits of cloud - Infosec headache

London, 11 October 2013

FixSpec announces immediate support for anonymous client access to its cloud development and certification platform. The enhancement allows brokers to offer their clients access to an advanced interface emulator platform while addressing concerns around customer confidentiality, by allowing connections to be certified without ever revealing the identity, CompID or even IP address of the underlying client.

"We are seeing strong interest in our certification platform because of both the improved developer experience it provides and our cost effective, fixed price subscription model. While the significant cost savings of hosted solution are clear, the question of client confidentiality has come up in many of our conversations with major sell side firms. Today's announcement takes the problem off the table" explained FixSpec founder Chris Lees.

Unlike other automated certification offerings, the FixSpec platform eschews rigid, scripted certification scenarios in favour of an accurate, unscripted emulator to allow developers to freely explore an interface, and to receive realistic responses based on their own activity instead of canned responses. The platform is offered as a fixed price subscription model without any hidden consulting or development fees.

The certification platform is currently used by Aquis Exchange as it prepares for launch later in the year.

FixSpec Launches Central

A Radical New Platform For Improved Customer Service and Monitoring

London, 27 August 2013

FixSpec announces the immediate availability of Central, a new enterprise platform designed for brokers and exchanges to deliver improved customer service, monitoring and operational efficiency when making and maintaining trading connections.

Central combines powerful, real-time business monitoring and analytics designed for both business and technical users, with unique online project management tools to improve operational efficiency. The platform also features a unique, patent-pending alerting algorithm capable of detecting software and/or behavioural change by trading counterparties which may pose a technical or compliance risk.

Central allows business managers to:

  • Watch client activity in real-time, allowing them to proactively assist and advise customers
  • Understand and analyse the functionality in use by clients
  • See an accurate, live view of expected customer implementation dates
  • Simply and quickly identify inactive network lines, generating significant cost savings

Central allows on-boarders, support and compliance teams to:

  • Visually search fully-decoded messages quickly
  • Receive alerts of software and / or behavioural change by counterparties
  • Run on-the-spot certifications based on activity in your existing environments (including production) without additional emulators or scripting

"We have applied some cutting-edge technology to problems consistently faced by brokers and exchanges today: how to improve our relationship and overall customer service proposition while doing more with fewer resources. In particular brokers are looking to save money by eliminating 'dark lines', how to better coordinate across internal departments, how to monitor very high transaction environments, and how to extend compliance oversight to detect counterparty change" explains FixSpec founder Chris Lees.

"The end result is awesome; there is simply nothing else like Central on the market today. It is a radical new approach to address the needs and inefficiencies in building and maintaining trading connections, delivered on a more cost-effective basis than hiring additional staff or undertaking lengthy in-house builds".

Central is designed to handle all versions of the FIX protocol as well as proprietary ASCII and binary protocols, and is asset-class neutral.

Aquis Exchange Links With FixSpec

Agreement aims to facilitate FIX testing for Members

London, 20 May 2013

Aquis Exchange Limited, the proposed pan-European stock exchange, and FixSpec, the FIX certification and connectivity specialist, have entered into an agreement which will facilitate Member testing for FIX order entry specifications and offer an automated certification platform for Aquis Exchange.

The arrangement allows prospective Aquis Exchange Members to access interactive versions of the FIX specifications, as well as a range of development tools designed to make connecting faster and easier. Tools include FixSpec's visual FIX decoder and the ability to quickly compare Aquis Exchange specifications against FIX Protocol Standards and other exchange specifications thereby reducing the amount of time spent manually comparing documents.

Members will also be able to access an automated certification platform over the internet which is designed to replicate exactly the message formats and flows of the Aquis Exchange system, and prepare them for formal certification. The certification environment allows developers to connect and interact with a replica of the Aquis Exchange system, get real-time feedback on message errors, and to interact with their orders via a real-time website.

Commenting on the agreement, FixSpec founder Chris Lees said: "We are excited to be working with Aquis Exchange and their prospective Members at this important moment in their launch preparations. We live in a world of very limited resources and by providing the tools to help Members connect faster and with more ease, Aquis Exchange is significantly reducing the barriers to entry and improving resource efficiency for both parties."

Alasdair Haynes, CEO of Aquis Exchange added: "Our aim is to make Aquis Exchange as time and cost efficient to connect to as possible. Our arrangement with FixSpec is an important step in this direction."

FixSpec Launches Innovative Multi-Venue Certification Platform

London, 26 February 2013

FixSpec Ltd announce the immediate availability of the world's first, multi-venue certification platform for the trading community. The platform gives developers the ability to make an internet connection to an interactive FIX service designed to replicate the message formats of a FIX counterparty such as an exchange or broker. Available all day, every day, developers can connect to the service on their own convenience, manually perform actions such as execute orders and cancel trades, and test their code against a certification script; all without needing to book a formal testing slot with the counterparty, saving a lot of wasted time for both parties.

"As I talk to our customers about the problems they face when building and maintaining trading connections, three issues keep coming up: access to accurate specifications, access to UAT, and coordinating testing with the counterparty. We believe we addressed the first issue 5 months ago when we first launched FixSpec.com, and today we believe we are tackling the other two head-on. I'm particularly excited that we were able to fully integrate the service directly into FixSpec.com, making it both intuitive and immediately accessible to our registered users" explains FixSpec Founder Chris Lees.

FixSpec offers a service to the issuers of FIX specifications to set up and maintain the service on their behalf for a fixed subscription fee, removing the burden of configuration away from venues and brokers and avoiding the uncertainty of expensive consultancy fees. Since the service is designed to run in the cloud and support multiple venues, there is no need for hardware or software installation, and the resulting cost is dramatically lower than some competitive on-premise products. In order to remain in sync with the underlying venue, FixSpec maintains a connection to the underlying venue's UAT system, continually regression testing it's responses to ensure a high degree of accuracy.

"Everybody wants to bring on new clients faster and give them a good initial experience. Getting it right can be expensive both in terms of hardware and support staff time, both of which are always in short supply. It's easy to forget that your clients and vendors are also connected to other firms too, so we think that a multi-venue platform which shares the cost of provision and ensures a consistent, quality experience makes lot of sense" commented Lees.

To showcase the functionality provided by the service, FixSpec has made access available to registered users of FixSpec.com.

Chi-X Australia Logo

FixSpec Launch Online FIX And ITCH Specifications With Chi-X Australia

London, 13 February 2013

FixSpec Ltd announce the immediate availability of online, interactive versions of the FIX order entry and ITCH-like CHIXMD market data specifications for accessing the Chi-X Australia market on FixSpec.com.

"We are thrilled to partner with Chi-X Australia to launch interactive, online specifications for not only their FIX order entry interface, but also their ITCH market data interface – a world first. Today's launch underscores our core belief that the practice of documenting trading interfaces using PDFs is outdated and inefficient. By embracing the concept of online specifications and the development tools that go along with that, Chi-X Australia is demonstrating to their current and prospective customers and vendors that they are committed to lowering the barriers of connectivity" explained FixSpec Founder Chris Lees.

FixSpec provides venues and brokers with the ability to provide their connectivity specifications to customers in a more accessible and intuitive way, and gives the developer community tools to accelerate development such as the ability to decode raw FIX and ITCH messages to spot potential formatting errors, and the ability to automatically compare specifications to clearly identify differences requiring development.

"FIX for order entry and ITCH for market data is an increasingly common combination for electronic markets worldwide, so the addition of ITCH support is a natural extension to our service, and is part of our Year of Innovation program" noted Lees.

"Simplifying trading and enhancing access to our interface specifications makes it easier for market participants to build to our marketplace. Chi-X Australia's involvement in this global initiative with FixSpec is yet another example of Chi-X delivering innovation and higher service levels to Australian market participants" said Michael Aikins, Chief Technology Officer, Chi-X Australia.

Access to the Chi-X Australia specifications is available to Chi-X participants and vendors currently. To request access, simply search for their specifications at FixSpec.com and follow the instructions.

If you are interested in viewing online ITCH messages but are not a client or prospect of Chi-X Australia, then FixSpec have provided an example specification based on observed best practices at fixspec.com/ITCH.

FixSpec.com Adds Access Controls To Protect "Secret Sauce"

London, 19th November 2012

FixSpec Ltd announces the immediate availability of access controls for both PDF and online FIX specifications on it's site. The controls are designed to allow specification authors greater privacy and control over who can see their specifications -a key requirement from the sell side community.

"Most exchanges and alternative trading venues are transparent with their specs, freely posting them online for anyone to see. That's just the tip of the iceberg though; there are many more brokers, vendors and niche venues which only provide their specs on demand as a way of protecting their intellectual property or "secret sauce". Of course we understand the need to protect intellectual property, but todays process comes with the big disadvantage that clients quickly lose track of the latest spec version and functionality" explains Chris Lees.

"FixSpec's goal is to make things more efficient, but not to force people to do things they aren't comfortable with. By adding access controls we deliver the benefits of a FIX search engine and automated update alerts to keep our registered community up-to-date with the latest specs, while also protecting the specification author."

Listing FIX specifications with FixSpec is free and easy. Simply email your specification to happytohelp@fixspec.com and we'll do the rest.

FixSpec Limited is pleased to announce that FixSpec.com has now finished it's beta phase and is now formally live. Introduced one month ago, the website helps FIX connect faster and easier by providing web tools to address common inefficiencies in the development process.

A new FIX decoder tool has also been added to the site to (locally) convert raw FIX messages into a human-readable format. FixSpec also announces that it has now surpassed the milestone of 100 FIX specifications indexed on it's specification search engine.

Founder Chris Lees explains the rationale behind the free tools "we live in a world of sophisticated electronic trading systems, and yet the business of making and maintaining connections is unnecessarily inefficient. FIX interfaces are described in lengthy, dry PDF documents buried away on venue websites or (worse) sent by email. By giving people easier access and better information about specs, and by providing web tools to bring that information to life, we can help accelerate development and reduce errors. This benefits both sides of the FIX connection; the faster the connection is done, the faster trading can begin."

FixSpec Announces Launch Of FixSpec.com

London, 25th September 2012

FixSpec Limited is pleased to announce the immediate beta launch of FixSpec.com, a new website designed to help FIX trading firms connect faster and easier.

Founder Chris Lees started the company after observing the same connectivity inefficiency in multiple organisations. "Global markets are increasingly electronic and inter-connected, and the need for quicker connectivity (and associated time-to-revenue) has never been more urgent. FIX is the lifeblood pulsing through the global financial networks, and yet the business of making and maintaining FIX connections is under-resourced, inefficient and broken. FixSpec will change that."

"FixSpec will be an unashamedly different company from what has come before; different in vision, technology and business model. We don't intend to sell expensive consulting services, or build on-site or desktop software, and we will give away fully-functional, free tools to the community. We want to focus the company on building the best productivity-enhancing, web-based tools for FIX we can" explains Lees.

At launch, the website offers a suite of free tools including a search engine for global FIX specifications, and the ability to explore all versions of the FIX protocol in an intuitive way. The site will remain in beta phase for approximately one month during which time additional features will be added. In addition to free tools, the company plans a suite of subscription products designed for trading venues, brokers and software vendors.
